Learn how to use a door hinge routing jig to install cabinet hinges with precise mortises every time. Step-by-step guide for accurate hinge placement.

Quick answer

Use a door hinge routing jig to rout precise hinge mortises in cabinet doors. The jig guides your router to create consistent depth and shape, eliminating guesswork and misaligned hinges.

Why use a jig instead of a chisel

A hinge routing jig ensures each mortise is exactly the same depth and shape, which is critical for hinges to sit flush. Hand chiseling is slower and less repeatable, especially for multiple doors. The jig also helps you align the hinge with the door edge and corner radius.

Choosing the right jig for your hinge size

Most door hinge routing jigs are adjustable for hinge length and corner radius. The Kreg Door Hinge Routing Jig, for example, works with hinges from 2-1/2" to 5" long. Check that your jig supports the hinge size and door thickness you are using. If your hinges fall outside that range, you will need a different jig or a custom template.

Step-by-step hinge installation with a routing jig

  1. 1. Mark hinge positions on the door: Measure and mark the hinge locations on the door edge. Typically, cabinet hinges are placed 3" from the top and bottom of the door. Use a square to ensure the marks are aligned. Check that the hinge locations are equidistant from the door ends to avoid a crooked installation.
  2. 2. Attach the jig to the door: Position the door hinge routing jig over your marks and secure it with the clamp. The GripMaxx clamp surface holds the jig firmly without damaging the door finish. Ensure the jig is flush against the door edge. Double-check that the jig is square to the door edge. A misaligned jig will produce a mortise that is off-center.
  3. 3. Set the router depth and install the bit: Insert the included 1/2" straight router bit into your router. Adjust the router's depth of cut to match the hinge thickness. A typical hinge mortise depth is 1/8" to 3/16". Use the jig's depth stop if available. Too deep a mortise will weaken the door; too shallow will leave the hinge proud. Test on scrap first.
  4. 4. Rout the mortise: Turn on the router and guide it along the jig's template. Move from left to right (or right to left) in smooth passes. Do not force the router; let the bit do the cutting. Remove the waste in multiple passes if needed. Rout in the direction that prevents the router from pulling away from the jig. Climb cutting can cause tear-out.
  5. 5. Clean up the mortise: After routing, remove the jig and inspect the mortise. Use a chisel to square the corners if the router bit left rounded corners. The jig's corner radius should match your hinge; if not, a quick chisel touch-up is needed. Check that the hinge fits snugly but not too tight. A hinge that is forced in may split the door.
  6. 6. Install the hinge: Place the hinge into the mortise and pre-drill pilot holes for the screws. Drive the screws in carefully. Ensure the hinge is flush with the door surface. If the hinge is not flush, adjust the mortise depth. Do not overtighten screws, which can strip the wood.
  7. 7. Repeat for all hinges and doors: Repeat steps 1-6 for each hinge on the door, then for all remaining doors. Using the same jig settings ensures all mortises are identical, making final cabinet assembly easier. Keep the jig settings unchanged between doors for consistency. If you change hinge sizes, re-adjust the jig and test again.

  • Door Hinge Routing Jig: Precise depth settings for perfect mortising Consistent depth prevents hinges from sitting too high or too low, which can cause binding or gaps.
  • Door Hinge Routing Jig: Accurately rout latches for 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" doors The jig also handles latch mortises, so you only need one tool for both hinge and latch installation.
  • Door Hinge Routing Jig: GripMaxxâ„¢ clamp surface secures the jig without damaging door surfaces No slipping during routing, and no clamp marks left on your finished door.
